Sparkle and Lipstick

When I tell my students the title of my beauty blog, they crack up because "it's what you tell us to do!"

I've been a voice teacher and professional singer for the better part of 20 years now. Makeup is in some sense a part of the job... it's part of the presentation.

It took me a while to understand that how you present yourself visually is part of how you present yourself professionally. For a VERY long time, I wasn't aware of how much of an impression that visual can make. I recall my teacher at Westminster Choir College put in her syllabus that we were to dress properly for our lessons. She called it a chance for us to practice our professionalism. We showed up in heels, skirts, dresses, trousers, and blouses (never t-shirts!)

People look at someone who is put-together and polished very differently from others who might not have put in the effort. Of course if there's no substance behind that person, then all bets are off. However, at the very least, it starts things on a promising note.

Your appearance is your costume...it's part of how you want to be perceived. Think of power heels. You don't mess with a woman who wears those literally like a boss!

There are levels to this and effort can mean different things to different people. I really like working on my appearance. Makeup and fashion are fun for me. And I am a complete person when I'm enjoying my makeup free days in my sweatpants.

Here are my rules:

1. You need something sparkly.

It will catch the light and you will look amazing!

2. You need to wear lipstick...

First, as a singer, your mouth is even more important and we need to see it. Second, it will keep you from looking washed out.

3. ...and blush. ALWAYS MORE BLUSH!

Yes, you may feel like it's too much, but harsh lights can do terrible things to your face!

So there you have it...Sparkle, lipstick, (and blush... and a killer outfit). Experiment and find what works for you. Add a sparkly brooch or earrings or a necklace, or try a new lipstick. See what happens!
